Bakuchiol vs. Retinol: What’s the Difference?
Retinoids are the skin-care ingredient most commonly used to address wrinkles and fine lines, and they’re available by prescription.
Retinols, on the other hand, are a weaker version of the retinoid compound and are available over the counter.
Bakuchiol is considered a natural alternative to a retinoid, and it may activate similar pathways to boost collagen production, says S. Tyler Hollmig, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and the director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. “While more studies are needed, I suspect that bakuchiol may improve skin tone and texture in a similar fashion to over-the-counter retinoids.”
Topical retinoids are effective in smoothing wrinkles and brightening skin because they increase skin cell turnover. That can spark side effects, such as burning, stinging, peeling, redness, and dryness.
But bakuchiol doesn’t seem to bring the same side effects as retinoids, earlier research points out.
Bakuchiol is generally less irritating, and may carry a lower risk of side effects like redness or flaking, a more recent study suggests.
Bakuchiol can help renew collagen and improve skin tone and texture, and may be a safer alternative to retinol for people experiencing acne, hyperpigmentation, and sensitive skin.
Bakuchiol has similar properties but is gentler on skin, so the idea is you get the perks (smoother, brighter skin) without the pitfalls (redness, irritation).
“Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, also known as the babchi plant. It’s been found in Ayurveda and Eastern medicine for centuries,” says the board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. More recently, bakuchiol has been formulated into products meant to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
